What this gas price series shows
The series covers U.S. regular gasoline across all formulations. EIA surveys retail outlets and publishes national weekly estimates; the annual figures shown here are simple averages of those weekly observations and include federal, state, and local taxes.
Annual averages, not today’s price
Each point summarizes a completed calendar year. The latest value on this page is the 2025 annual average, so it should not be read as a current pump price. Local prices can also differ substantially from the national average.
How to compare the values
All prices are nominal dollars per gallon. That preserves the EIA source values but does not adjust older prices for inflation. A comparison of purchasing power over time would require a separate, clearly documented inflation adjustment.
Methodology limits
The national estimate does not describe every fuel grade, station, or region. EIA notes a survey methodology change beginning in May 2018, so small differences across that boundary should be interpreted with care. The chart is historical reference data, not a real-time fuel-price service.

Transformation
The values are copied directly from the EIA annual series. EIA calculates each annual value as a simple average of its weekly national retail observations. ChartMaker has not inflation-adjusted or otherwise transformed the source values.
