Venn Diagram Maker

Find what two or three lists share—and what belongs to just one. Paste your items to calculate exact overlap counts, inspect the members of each region, and download a PNG or SVG.

1. Enter your sets

Two-set mode keeps Set C in the project for later, but excludes it from the results.

One item per line; spreadsheet tabs also separate items. Matching is case-sensitive. Spaces at the ends and blank lines are ignored; duplicates count once per set. Commas inside names are kept, so New York, NY is one item. Do not paste column headers.

Set A

5 unique items

Set B

4 unique items

Up to 1,000 non-empty entries and 50,000 characters per set; 120 characters per item. Over-limit input is rejected, not truncated.

Subtitle, source and footnote

Plain text included in the preview and image exports. Long text wraps and reduces the plot's available space; keep notes brief and use a larger image for detailed captions. No text is sent to analytics.

Colour palette

Keep labels or legends visible; colours alone may not distinguish every series. Colours repeat for larger datasets.

Applies to PNG and SVG downloads. Dark labels work best on light backgrounds. The preview checkerboard is not exported.

Applies to PNG and SVG downloads. The preview matches the image proportions; wider images retain side padding to avoid distortion. SVG stays sharp when resized; some editors may substitute fonts.

The region counts and every item are available in the table below. Circle areas do not represent quantities.

Circles are not to scale. Each count describes only that region. A + B counts items in both sets. Items outside all entered sets cannot be counted without a separate full population.

Make a Venn diagram from lists

  1. Choose two or three sets. Give each set a name and enter one item per line. You can paste a column from a spreadsheet without its header.
  2. Check the counts in the circles. Open each region’s item list in the table to verify exactly where a name or value belongs.
  3. Choose a title and colours, then download a PNG or SVG. Save a local project to edit the lists again later.

The diagram updates while you edit. Matching is case-sensitive: Apple and apple are different items. Repeating the same item within a list does not increase its count.

What a Venn diagram shows

Each circle represents a set: a collection of distinct items. An item can belong to one set or several. Overlapping regions show shared membership, while the parts that do not overlap show items found in just one set.

These circles are schematic, not area-proportional. A large-looking region does not necessarily contain more items; read the printed counts. Even an empty intersection retains its region with a count of zero. The diagram is not an Euler diagram that changes its geometry to hide empty overlaps.

Union, intersection, and “only” regions

The union, written A ∪ B, contains everything in A, B, or both. The intersection, A ∩ B, contains items in both. For two sets, the union count is |A| + |B| − |A ∩ B|; subtracting the intersection avoids counting shared items twice.

With three sets, A + B only means items in A and B but not C. The central A + B + C region contains items in all three. To find the full A ∩ B intersection, add the A + B only count to the central count. Every item appears in exactly one of the seven exclusive regions, so adding those seven counts gives the union.

This tool knows only the lists you supply. It cannot calculate how many items belong to none of the sets, or an overall percentage of a population you have not entered.

Worked example: three activities

The example uses fictional activity lists. Cycling has Ada, Ben, Chen, Dina and Emil. Swimming has Ben, Chen, Fatima and Gus. Running has Chen, Dina, Gus and Hana.

In three-set mode, Chen is in all three activities. Ben is in Cycling and Swimming only; Dina is in Cycling and Running only; Gus is in Swimming and Running only. Ada and Emil are in Cycling only, Fatima in Swimming only, and Hana in Running only. The seven region counts are 2, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1 and 1: eight different people in total.

In two-set mode, Running is excluded entirely. Cycling and Swimming share Ben and Chen, and their union contains seven people. Changing modes keeps the third list in the project, so you can return to it without retyping.

Input rules and saved diagrams

New lines and tabs separate items. Leading and trailing whitespace is ignored, but spaces inside a name, punctuation, letter case and numeric spelling are kept. For example, New York, NY is one item; 01 and 1 are different text items. Quotes are literal characters, not CSV quoting syntax. General comma-separated CSV files should be converted to one-item-per-line lists before pasting.

Each active set allows up to 1,000 non-empty entries, including repeats, and 50,000 characters in total. Individual items may contain up to 120 characters. Invalid or oversized active lists hide the results and disable export; no entries are silently dropped. Empty sets are allowed, but at least one item is needed for an image export.

Processing, local saves and PNG/SVG creation happen in your browser. My Charts and recovery drafts are device-local, not cloud backups. Download a project file before clearing browser data or moving to another device. Item lists are not sent to analytics.
